History:
Cagliostro was born a common child in a poor village with a sickly body. In those days, such conditions were not uncommon and were for the most part lethal. It was not expected that she would live beyond her teens, if even that long. However, she wasn't about to let that stop her. With her younger sister's help in gathering materials, Cagliostro studied and experimented with magic - not to cure her body, but to rid herself of it entirely and create a new one to take its place. And after years of trial and error, she succeeded. Cagliostro performed magic that no one else had ever seen before - literally inventing Alchemy. After securing herself a more appropriate and perfectly healthy body, her ambitions only grew, seeking greater technique and knowledge, founding her own guild of Alchemy alongside her sister, amassing, wealth, fame and most of all, knowledge. Living with an insatiable curiosity, there was nothing she wouldn't do in her pursuit of knowledge, to know everything to the ends of the skies.
Her sister held much more modest ambitions, eventually retiring from alchemy and choosing to grow old with her family in a remote island Cagliostro set aside for her final days. Though she always did and would always love her sister, this didn't stop Cagliostro from continuing her pursuit of knowledge - to the point of using her ability to transmute new bodies for herself to gain effective immortality, forever able to switch into newer, youthful bodies whenever she desired. After her sister's passing, there was little left to hold the genius alchemist back in her pursuit of knowledge - and ultimate cuteness. Selfish, capricious, arrogant and with little regard for teaching or leading, she was hardly the glorious leader the now rather structured and proudly storied Helmuth Alchemist Guild wanted, nor did she care much for them either now, a rift hundreds of years wide growing between them, until finally the very alchemist guild she had founded chose to hunt her down and eliminate her to preserve their proud image. In the end, they were unable to kill the Alchemist of Beginnings, with her nigh immortality, but they were successful in sealing her - and so she stayed for a thousand years.
It was not until ages later, after great wars and the rise and fall of kingdoms and empires, that Cagliostro was finally freed from her seal by one intrepid crew of skyfarers. She intended to kill them all in order to keep her resurrection a secret, but after having her interest piqued by Lyria, she decided to spare their lives and join their crew instead, accompanying them through adventures that would change the face of the skydom and even beyond.
Eventually, she ended up coming into direct conflict with the Helmuth Alchemy Guild that had originally sealed her away. They poisoned her immortal body with a philosopher's stone and even tried to turn the descendant of her sister, an alchemist named Clarisse who had been hunting her down as her family's mission, against her. In the end though, Clarisse ended up siding with Cagliostro and helped the founder reconstruct her body by using her destructive powers to destroy the elements poisoning Cagliostro - allowing her to recreate herself anew again, this time combining elements of the philosopher's stone to wield even greater power than before. After destroying the elements of the Helmuth Alchemy Guild that had turned on her and sending their leader running, Cagliostro was finally free of them, at least for now. As well, she gained an apprentice in Clarisse, who in turn succeeded her family to become the head of the Guild and declare that they would no longer hunt down the founder, Cagliostro. With that settled, Cagliostro was finally free to continue her research and exploration of the skies, while also visiting places of her sister's to research the power that Clarisse holds in common with Cagliostro's long dead sibling.
Personality:
Cagliostro is fundamentally driven by a quest for perfection - a perfect knowledge of the world and its mysteries, and a perfect cuteness. These aren't out of any need to prove herself to others, either with superior intellect or by winning their admiration, but purely out of her own self-satisfaction. Unlike her sister, who was simply happy to leave behind their life of poverty, even once Cagliostro escaped her terminal body and impoverished conditions, she continued to strive for ever greater heights, seeing how she could expand the art of Alchemy and further its research, and in turn learn everything she could about the world. During Halloween, she tracks down the story of the Lost Jack and solves the mystery behind the apparition - only to keep it to herself, rather than share the answer with anyone else.
At some point, her desire for knowledge and technique also came to include a desire for perfect cuteness, causing her to shed her adult form and take on that of a cute little girl, in her opinion the cutest in all the skies. As part of her quest to become the cutest, she enjoys acting as cutely and adorably as possible, to the point that she seems almost like a different person - a more cute, higher pitched voice, an adorably bubbly way of speaking and referring to herself in third person, teasing and fawning over others innocently, all of it comes naturally to her. However, it comes and goes as her mood pleases - as the performance is for her own satisfaction in being the cutest, it's not as if she's trying to deceive anyone, so she can quickly switch between her cuter way of acting to suddenly acting far more pompously and arrogantly, laying on thick her own claims of magnificence and power, demanding that other kneel before her or face her wrath. With a far rougher tone and deeper intonation, she actually cuts a terrifying figure despite her tiny size, especially with the power she wields. These switches are constantly seen and she never seems to care how shocked people are by the difference nor bother to pretend to be what she isn't - she is both, whenever she wants.
When not being as cute as possible, her moods can range from contemplative to downright maniacal. She is an alchemist who follows her curiosity and bends her vast intellect towards sating it with the knowledge of the world, and despite her seemingly selfish, capricious personality, she's actually quite fond of introspection given her quest of constant improvement. Not that it ever causes her to reconsider her overbearing ego or drive. Given her power, knowledge and long life, it's not surprising that she often sees others as just being objectively beneath her. However, her judgments are based less on anything like status, power or wealth, but rather on their uniqueness and drive. The powerful, storied and prideful organization that the Helmuth Alchemy Guild had become held little interest to her, while she found some nugget of potential in the scrappy, struggling Clarisse who wouldn't give up. Though perhaps as well it was partly because she resembles her sister - Cagliosto hides a sentimental side of herself, becoming extremely embarrassed when called out on it, like when Lyria points out that she just wanted to visit her sister's grave, not hunt it for research materials. This side of her is also seen when she destroys the memorial the Helmuth Alchemy Guild had erected over her sister's grave - it's one of the few times she displays real, true anger for someone other than herself, clearly enraged that they guild would take her sister, who only ever wanted to live quietly and simply, and turn her into a gilded figurehead for their own purposes. As another example of her judgment values, she even say she might have forgiven it if they'd really done it out of a reverence for knowledge and a desire to better themselves, but it supremely pissed her off that it was just for the prideful ceremony of solidifying their hierarchy and mythology as an organization.
As lofty as her goals can often seem - the pursuit of knowledge, perfection and cuteness - it's true that she can also be rather petty, violent and spiteful. One of her main motivations as a child was to prove the whole world wrong when they all said she'd die before reaching adulthood. She's also quick to mete out punishment and vengeance on any who wrong her, not hesitating to kill. And she sees no problems with launching a violent assault on a military base just to reclaim her research materials. And she clearly enjoys fighting, laughing maniacally and proclaiming her own greatness as she takes down her enemies with her awesome powers. She also doesn't hesitate to threaten anyone who disagrees with her, even crewmates, or get in the way of what she wants to do or poke fun at her cuteness - though she's probably joking... probably.
Sometimes adorable, sometimes terrifying, seeming childish one moment only to appear incredibly wise and serious the next, it's hard to see who the real Cagliostro is and she's perfectly fine with that. Everything is for her own self-satisfaction, even if that means helping others for her own satisfaction or putting them down.
Powers and Abilities:
Cagliostro invented Alchemy and is a supreme master of it. At will, she can transmute most materials, able to craft barriers and jutting spires of earth at will, summon thrones or a variety of polished weapons in the middle of battle. She's even more skilled with biological transmutation, being able to create new bodies for herself or even others, easily able to heal wounds, cure ailments and enhance the physical capabilities of others. She can create familiars like her pet snake, Ouroboros, that she summons on command to attack her enemies or swallow them whole. Even when killed, she can remove her soul from the physical plane and perform alchemy to create a new body to inhabit if nothing interferes. After reforming this way with the philosopher's stone as a component, she has only become more powerful, able to wield blasts of fire and crushing masses of darkness against her foes alongside her arsenal of elemental and biological transmutation. Outside of battle she can also create things as intricate as clothing, and other highly technical goods, though that's hardly surprising compared to crafting an entire living body from scratch. Alchemy still functions on equivalent exchange though, so she can't create matter out of nothing - but with how freely she can manipulate the world around her, that's barely a restriction.
Her biggest weakness is ironically her sister's specialty, which was inherited by Clarisse - Existential Dissolution, or the absolute deconstruction of matter. Alchemy functions by deconstructing, then reconstructing things, but this destructive Alchemy is basically the antithesis to Cagliostro's constructions, proving to be the key to her downfall when she was sealed and almost destroying her again when the Helmuth Alchemy Guild managed to copy it and tried to use it against her. So while most physical methods of harm will fail to ever kill her, there are absolute ways that could possibly destroy her on such a level that she couldn't recover - and of course, being sealed away isn't something she can necessarily get out of either, so it seems magical deterrents are a far better way to oppose her than physical ones.
Inventory: Her research book - she doesn't actually have much she can't just create on her own.
